Facilitating player immersion through active team collaboration is at the core of my work. With 20 years of experience across games and other media, I’ve helped shape narratives for projects of all sizes, including lead roles. Happily freelancing since 2017, I offer narrative design, writing, implementation and consulting in German and English. From early exploration to launch and live service, I support teams throughout the process.

Ivonne Vaziri-Elahi

Shortly after studying scriptwriting and film dramaturgy in Berlin’s self-organized filmArche, I entered the games industry in 2008 with Radon Labs, where I played a key role in shaping the narrative of the RPG “The Dark Eye: Drakensang – The River of Time”. Soon after, I created the world and designed quests, characters and story arcs for Bigpoint’s MMORPG “Drakensang Online”. A few hundred quests later, I decided to go freelance long-term.

Since 2017, I’ve been working with indie studios, on interactive cross-media projects, a game-based learning format and even game title song lyrics. My work has also expanded into narrative design and writing for a story-heavy board game.

I’ve been fortunate to work on several projects that have been honored with multiple major industry awards. In addition to hands-on project work and consulting, I contribute to the community through workshops on game writing, speaking at events and acting as a game jam juror. I actively invest in my professional development by attending courses, workshops and conferences.

Hands-on creative work

Under the umbrella term of “Narrative Designer” or “Writer” as a job title often many roles and tasks are included. For a better understanding of my work, I‘ll break down what I can bring to a project in more detail.

Narrative Design

The narrative is the glue that holds the game together. As such, storytelling is a collective task involving all disciplines in game development. Through close cooperation, I ensure that the narrative architecture serves the player fantasy and project goals. Using a methodical approach, I develop narrative systems that connect story, world, and gameplay to create maximum immersion.

Worldbuilding & IP

Whether you‘re developing your own original material or working with an existing IP: I can define or distill the foundations, systems and rules of a game‘s setting and collaborate with the team to create a consistent, believable world that can grow organically. Compelling worlds with meaningful themes increase player engagement and can even enlarge your brand beyond the current game.

Character Development

Be it for player characters or NPCs, I develop relatable personalities, backstories and character arcs with gameplay relevance in mind and breathe life into quest givers and enemies. Working closely with artists, I use their time efficiently by delivering precise, actionable briefs and maintaining short feedback cycles. Through inducing attachment to characters, I make players care.

Story Development

An exciting plot that matches the core game loop will keep players hooked across progression points and improve retention. Whether starting from scratch or strengthening existing ideas, I create extendable stories of any genre across linear or branching narratives. Focusing on player agency I construct the story through emotional choices and consequences while staying within scope.

Quest Design

Quests are at the heart of experiencing the storyworld through gameplay. I design quests that integrate with mechanics, progression, location and narrative logic. This includes objectives, player choices and pacing. Whether breaking down the main story or adding smaller plots: Interesting quests enhance player motivation, make grinding less boring, and can even make failure fun.

Game Writing

If narrative is the glue, writing is the glitter – found everywhere from marketing trailers and cutscenes to map hotspots and tooltips. Good writing improves clarity and adds flavor and meaning to the entire player experience. I create memorable names, authentic dialogue, funny item descriptions and more in German or English, always with tone, atmosphere and length in mind.

Implementation & Content Design

From prototyping to testing, my experience covers a range of narrative tools, quest and dialogue editors. I confidently implement writing and quests with variables, condition logic and trigger placements which provides consistency and reduces communication overhead. I also create ambient content like environmental storytelling or NPC behaviour that makes your game world come alive.

Team Liaison

The right words can clarify the project vision for the team and shape the team’s language. On site or remote, I support narrative visionkeeping through documentation and proactive communication with all disciplines – be it Design, Art and Animation, Audio, Programming, QA, CM or Marketing. For localization and voice recording, I can provide guides and notes for context and direction.

Supervision & Knowledge Sharing

Director / Lead Role

Whether taking ownership of a project’s narrative single-handedly or supervising a team, I ensure narrative integrity creatively and structurally. I align project goals, timelines, team abilities and company values by coordinating workflows and communication. Aware of how psychological safety impacts creative work, I provide empathic guidance and support to diverse teams.

Consulting

My best advice comes for free: Speak with a specialist as early as possible. Even if you can‘t hire an expert writer or narrative designer, consultation can help your team build strong narrative foundations. I evaluate concepts, review material, answer questions, help navigate specific challenges and provide methodical solutions. Consulting can be one-time or ongoing, remote or on-site.

Teaching & Public Speaking

For sharing my knowledge and passion, I offer workshops on game narrative and interactive writing for teenagers and adults. I have given talks at events like Devcom Game Developers Conference, conducted school workshops for Stiftung Digitale Spielekultur and am a lecturer at BIMM university Berlin. Projects

The Dark Eye – Drakensang: The River of Time

Classic PC-Fantasy-RPG by Radon Labs (2008-2009), published by DTP.

The prequel to the first part, set in the world of a famous German TTRPG. My debut in the industry.

A story about greed and power and the beginning of a wonderful friendship. The heroes travel across the Great River, encounter elves, fight pirates and demons, and uncover a political conspiracy.

I was mainly responsible for IP integration, narrative design, story production, character development, dialogue writing (in German) with extensive branching, and cinematics scriptwriting. I had narrative ownership of two main locations and was responsible for the guidance of an intern.

Oathsworn: Into the Deepwood

Dark Fantasy Boardgame by Shadowborne Games (2020-2021).

Only a few cities still stand as pillars of civilization against the madness of the cursed Deepwood, which tries to devour even these last bastions every day. And yet a few brave souls venture there voluntarily in order to wrest its secrets from it, clinging to their weapons and the hope for survival in the face of unnatural horrors.

I wrote interactive story chapters 10 and 11 (in English, ~20k words each), was involved in additional worldbuilding for the A’Dendri species as well as the narrative and character development for my chapters. 

The game‘s first and second edition got funded on Kickstarter with the staggering sum of almost 5.2 million dollars. Among games with above 2.000 ratings, with 9.2 it scored as the highest rated game on boardgamegeek.

Drakensang Online

Fantasy-MMORPG by Bigpoint Berlin (2010-2016).

After two thousand years of division between the worlds, the banished creatures of the Anderworld return to Dracania. Once again, humanity faces the brink of extinction. Only an ancient alliance can rise to the challenge with heroic determination.

I was primarily responsible for world building, narrative design, story production, character development, quest design, and game writing in German and English. “Drakensang Online” has been translated into 25 languages and is still live since 2011.

Fata Deum

PC-Strategy God Sim Game by 42 Bits Entertainment (in development since 2019). Publisher Hooded Horse Inc./ Aerosoft GmbH. Funded by Film- und Medienstiftung NRW.

Early Access Release is planned for September 2025.

As Lead Narrative Designer I was responsible for world building, characters, story production, cinematics, quest design and dialogue writing in both German and English.

My work philosophy

My approach to narrative design uses a structured method that starts with the player fantasy and focuses on aligning storyworld and gameplay. This team effort makes close collaboration essential. I thrive in iterative processes with clear project goals and strong visionkeeping to ensure coherence for player immersion, ideally joining the team early in the project. 

Creativity and analytical thinking go hand in hand in my work, and I connect easily with people through authenticity and openness. New challenges don‘t scare me – they motivate me. I believe in value-driven development and love stories that inspire personal growth and positive action.

A word on “Artificial Intelligence”

There are both chances and risks of using AI for humanity in general and creative professionals in particular. I have decided to explore AI as a tool while maintaining some boundaries to keep training my mental faculties following the use-it-or-loose-it reasoning.

At this point, none of the models seem truly intelligent and I don‘t believe they can replace a human mind and logic with true understanding of the human experience and artistic intent. Games, like all forms of art, are the expression of human imagination and a reflection of human perception. Game Design in its core is about feelings. If we want to preserve games as more than meaningless entertainment, I think we should keep humans involved in more than just prompting. Otherwise, who will be qualified to evaluate AI output in the future?

TTRPG & Board Game

The roleplaying games of my youth paved my way into the games industry with the famous German IP “The Dark Eye” that I worked on both in a video game and a TTRPG lorebook. I have loved boardgames since childhood and was fortunate to contribute to the much awarded boardgame “Oathsworn: Into the Deepwood”. Transmedia / Cross-Media

I love good stories – no matter the medium. Thanks to my diverse professional experience, I can develop customized concepts for a wide variety of formats. Identifying the core qualities of an IP, I leverage the advantages of different media for content development. I have created concepts for interactive transmedia experiences with multi-user storylines, including escape room riddles.

Scriptwriting

Based on my foundation in film dramaturgy and scriptwriting, I am skilled to develop and write punchy linear scripts for video game cutscenes, transmedia content and epic marketing trailers.
